Commonly called Bo.
Bo-jutsu is the art of stick and staff fighting.
In feudal Japan, the art of stick fighting was practiced by virtually everyone from the samurai to the peasants. When bladed and metal weapons were banned, farmers and peasants were forced to use whatever implements they had at there disposal to defend there lives and the lives of there loved ones. Bo-jutsu (a system of combat utilizing a bo) employs a two handed gripping action and includes techniques such as striking, thrusting, blocking, parrying, deflecting, sweeping and holding. In well practiced hands the grip can be quickly changed to alter the length of the weapon to aid in long range or close quarter combat. The art of bo-jutsu was developed from Japanese spear and lance techniques. The bo was the most common weapon taught in most schools of martial arts in feudal Japan. As a most effective weapon in it’s own right, continued use and practice of the bo will improve body movement and agility in other weapon practice as well as unarmed arts.
