SELF DEFENCE
TAI SHI KAI SELF DEFENCE
(FREEFORM APPLICATIONS)
Tai Shi Kai Wado-Ryu karate academy has in it’s syllabus over 50 self defence applications. The majority of these are against a front punch (either straight or hook punch). The students first reaction is usually to apply an inside or an outside kakete using tai sabaki while simultaneously striking the attackers eyes. The application is then executed. Although not strictly kata applications in the traditional sense, they do utilize movements and techniques used in traditional kata applications. Techniques include strikes to pressure points, locks, sweeps, throws, breaks and chokes, to name a few. Students learn these self defence applications in sets of ten.
